Brodie had a comfortable overall win in the Optimist but the pack are getting closer. The Starling went down to a countback victory to Olivia.

There were a couple of errors in the C3 and C4 (C4 was also Club Champs CC7) race results which have now been corrected. The placings have not changed for the series though. One error was simply reading a a handwritten 7 as a 2 (14:52:42 instead of 14:57:42) when entering the results for the Lasers. Thanks to the eagle eyed error spotters. Please let me know if results look a bit weird as this kind of error is very easy to make, especially with some people's writing, but I'm not one to complain.

The racing today was great to watch with lots of lead changes through the races and very close finishes in many of the fleets. Win of the day has to be Rob Ebert's come from behind in the last 50m to pip Jacko on the line by 0.5m or less ("it was the weed" we heard Jacko saying).

Easter was always going to be a bit of a challenge for getting good numbers of boats on the water. The Laser class did the club proud though. The wind was light and vaguely from the north but it hung in there for the race.

The recent WTYA event at Thames was also plagued by light winds, with only one race sailed on Monday and none on Sunday. At least when the wind is light on the lake we don't get any annoying waves that stop our boats just when we are starting to get them moving, then make the sails flap around so they don't develop any power. Even worse is the tide. A number of boats were drifting off to Cape Colville with the ebbing tide and needed towing back to the club.

Back to the Mark Foy races. Saturdays results are found below. There were some excellent close finishes. Ray Oxborrow held off the fast closing in Lasers (well slowly closing in really) to win the Senior division and Annie won the Junior classes. The first link below is to the Trophy Day Race and the second is to the combined Mark Foy results to get the top senior Mark Foy sailor and the top junior. The combined series uses the HYC Highpoint scoring system, so the highest score wins. Scott and I ended up on equal points but he finished just in front of me on Saturday so wins on count back.

Given that there is enough sailors, wind, and water this will allow the Starling and P Class fleets to have 5 races in their club champs and the Optimists to have 4 races. Normally 5 races is the minimum number needed to complete a club champs series but for the 2012-2013 season the HYC Race Committee has altered the rules for the Optimists to allow 4 races to be sufficient for this series.

Unfortunately there will be no club champion for the 3.7 Class. Due to the combination of poor numbers in their fleet and very low lake levels limiting their ability to sail, they have completed only a couple of races in this series.

Congratulations to Blake Buxton in the Laser and Jack Ninnes in the Zephyr.

The results used are without any handicap applying. The scoring system is the HYC highpoint system (highest score wins). With this scoring the amount of points the winner gets varies with the size of fleets with about 6 points for a win in a fleet of three boats and nearly 12 points with a fleet of 30 boats. If all the starters finish the last finisher gets 2 points, with all the other places getting points in between 2 and the winners score. Sailors who fail to finish get 1 point and those that did not compete on the day get zero. There are only 5 more scoring races scheduled this season but in some fleets the winning position is not completely decided (e.g. P Class) and one of the boats currently lying 2nd or 3rd could sneak in with a few first placings over the next two weeks.

The kind of day that gives race officers stomach ulcers with the breeze not settling into one quarter of the compass till after 1500hr. Things improved enough for the second race of the day to be included in the club champs series. Extra care is needed with the lake so low with a couple of collisions related to boats suddenly stopping and doing pirouettes around their centreboards. Below are the results to date with close points in many of the fleets. Have a look at the P Class with 1st 2nd and third all one point aparts and the Lasers with Adam in his Radial rig with a slight advantage. There were some new old names in the Starling fleet with two of the regular 3.7 sailors scaling down to the Starling class as the low lake level makes 3.7 sailing hazardous for their long skinny foils.

Although the wind strength was a bit up and down with the occasional weird gust catching skippers off guard, on the whole conditions were great conditions for racing. Not bad for the spectators either with three gybe marks and one of them not far from the club house.

The handicaps have been adjusted so check out the new handicaps and results from the first two races of the C series.

C series so far

Racing was exceptionally close at times. For instance in the first race Lasers coming 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th finished within a 10 second window of time (this stresses out the tower helpers).

On a rules note, one skipper expressed surprise that the race committee is able to protest a boat without any skipper protesting (Race Committees can do this). In the episode today the skipper hit one of the start marks. Because they felt that they had been forced to hit the mark in order to avoid a collision with a give way boat they did not take a 1 turn penalty. To be exonerated like this the skipper who hit the mark would have to protest the give way boat involved in the incident. Unless you are certain that you are in the right it is probably wiser to take the penalty turn even if you think you are in the right and your intention is to protest the other boat. The logic being if your protest is upheld all you have lost is the time to take a 1 turn penalty (and the give way boat would be disqualified unless that boat took a 2 turn penalty straight after the starting incident). Alternatively if your protest is rejected your finish will still count as you took your penalty (if you hadn't taken the penalty turn you would have to be disqualified at the protest).

Burnsco HYC Regatta

This years regatta was notable for unhelpful weather conditions and excellent fleets of Laser and P Class. The long dry spell meant lake levels were low and a well placed ridge of high pressure meant the morning breezes were non-existent. These two factors put paid to the 3.7 fleet. In fact two their ranks were sufficiently desperate to have a go at Laser sailing. The 3.7 boats have long (and expensive) foils. The bottom of the lake is a mixture of very soft mud (causes the boats to slow mysteriously and steer funny as the rudder slices through the top few centimetres of goop), and unfortunately some hard bits of debris, old logs and the like.

On both Saturday and Sunday racing did not start till after lunch due to very light and variable winds. Saturday saw 4 races completed back to back in the afternoon with the wind improving as the afternoon wore on. The last race starting at 1800hr in a fair westerly. Only one race was run on Sunday and torturous it was. Still the best sailors seemed to come out on top at the end of the day.

Many willing helpers in the kitchen meant the sailors were well catered for with fresh lunches and a dinner on Saturday night. The race officer, Jim Brokenshire, also had a team of assistants in the tower an out on the water in the patrol boats. We also had generous support from Burnsco Marine and Leisure, and NZSailing ensuring a fine pool of prizes. The two major spot prizes were won by two of the visiting skippers so their effort coming over the Kaimais to compete was well rewarded. Thanks for spotting the mistakes.

The last two races of the B Series were scheduled for Saturday 23rd February. Unfortunately competing weather systems on either side of the Waikato meant very unstable breezes and the second race was cancelled. I have included two sets of results. Please let me know if you spot any errors. The handicap scoring determines the B Series Cups. With this scoring each skippers time to finish a race, their elapsed time, is adjusted by their handicap number to get their corrected time and it is the corrected time that determines the placings in the race.

As an example;

P 97 - elapsed time=50 minutes, handicap=1, corrected time=50-(50*1/100)=49.5 minutes

P 215 - elapsed time=51 minutes, handicap=6, corrected time=51-(51*6/100)= 47.9 minutes

In this example P97 is first across the line but P 215 wins on handicap.

The championship scoring is based on elapsed time.

When you look at the results you may notice some fleets of boats had no scores on some of the races. For the Starlings race B1 was abandoned because there was confusion about the course. The other gaps in the results happen when less than three boats sailed in a particular fleet, and for most of our club events you need three boats to make a fleet. Don't despair if you made the effort to sail despite their being 'no fleet' these races will still count towards the aggregate cups.
