Frostply Fortnight

The following is a report of the Frostply fleet (8th March 2010):

The Frostply fortnight was a combination of regattas combining the Burnsco Hamilton Yacht Club Regatta 2010 and the Thames Yacht Club Regatta 7th March 2010.  The turnout indicated the Frostply class is still active, and striving for more numbers.  There are sailors and boats around capable and competent to be on the water.

The turnout of the Frostplys at the Hamilton Yacht Club Regatta was less than anticipated. Potentially there could be more than ten boats and crew available at the regatta.  Only two Hamilton boats (half the dedicated Hamilton fleet) turned up at the Hamilton Burnsco regatta. The boats and crew from other clubs did not eventuate, though three boats were kindly borrowed from Ngaroto Yacht Club, and Cambridge to provide a fleet of five boats.  Four boats took to the water. 

With confusion in the first race from fickle winds extending the distance from first to last place and the lack of shortened course for the leaders, the first race was thrown out of the results.  Another race was sailed with similar placings.  After waiting around on Sunday, a final race was sailed in the afternoon, with two boats sailing a match racing dual around the course.  These two boats took the overall 1st and 2nd placings of the Frostply regatta.

Three boats were transported from Hamilton to Thames for the regatta on 7th March to make a large contingent of Frostplys. Up to eight Frostplys were on the water with crew of varying experience, from the never ever sailed before, to the ‘old hands’ of yester year centerboard Frostply sailing.  The combination of experienced and learners in a single boat shows the great use of the Frostply as a learn to sail boat.

Three races were sailed on Sunday at Thames with winds beginning with a strong breeze and moderating as the day went on.  The first race tested the boat durability and ability of sailors to get to the start line on time.  The second race was a very close finish between Malcolm France, Peter Ganley, and Adrian France.  Malcolm France was ahead of Peter Ganley with Adrian France powering to the finish line overtaking Peter and Malcolm thankful that the finish line was so near. All three finished within the same amount of boat lengths. Many boats were at the line at the start of the final race (as opposed to the previous race with boats beginning one minute early and not returning to correct the start!). Overall results for the top three Frostply’s were (in order) Adrian France, Peter Ganley, & Malcolm France. The trophy was well contested, and regatta well organized by Thames Yacht Club.

There appears to be a growing contingent of active Frostplys again at Thames Yacht Club, available boats at Hamilton Yacht Club, and willingness from other clubs to participate and provide boats.  There are fleets of Frostplys and to build stronger numbers just requires a few more helms people and crew. Those new to sailing and those experienced in sailing enjoyed the Frostply sailing held over the two weekends. Let’s do it again and see how many more Frostplys can go on the water.
